Ground Squirrels

Between Howarth Park and Spring Lake Park there's a strange in-between area with piles of wood and timber. A group of ground squirrels () can be found on sunny days, watching hikers and bikers as they pass by. They're pretty shy and will freeze if you stop for a bit to look at them and entirely disappear if you overstay your welcome.


  1. I'm impressed that you can capture so much information drawing squirrels from life. They move around so fast, I usually can't even get a good snapshot of them! What's your secret?

  2. Oh, you've made my day! I feel like I can't capture them at all! I've seen sketches by artists that seem to capture so much. I'm still so slow and clumsy at it. To answer your question -- I try to do quick gesture sketches, ignoring detail and aiming to capture the essence. Ground squirrels are good to practice on because they "freeze" when frightened. As long as I keep my binoculars aimed at them they'll hold still! I guess that's my secret!
